What is the Definition of Infertility?
Infertility is the “inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse.” This means that a couple is not able to become pregnant after 1 year of trying. However, for women aged 35 and older, inability to conceive after 6 months is generally considered infertility.
85% of couples with normal fertility will conceive within 1 year of trying. If a couple doesn’t conceive in the first year, their chance of conceiving gets lower each month. This happens more quickly as the woman gets older.
For a healthy woman in her 20’s or early 30’s, the chance of conceiving each month is 25-30%. But by the time a woman is 40 years old, the chances are 10% or less. Impaired ability to have a child affects about 11% of the reproductive-age population. In a survey of married women, the CDC found that 6% of women in the U.S. are infertile.
25% of infertile couples have more than one factor that contributes to their infertility. In approximately 40% of infertile couples, the male partner is either the sole cause or contributing cause of infertility.
In other words, about one-third of infertility cases can be attributed to male factors, and about one-third to factors that affect women. For the remaining one-third of infertile couples, infertility is caused by a combination of problems in both partners or, in about 20% of cases, is unexplained.

Why Are People Turning to Natural Options?
In today’s healthcare system, more and more people are seeking answers that don’t include synthetic or chemically laden medications, and the long list of side effects that accompany them. They are also desiring a more cost-effective approach to their own wellness.
Instead, they are returning to the ancient wisdom of plant medicine and the many positive benefits that come with a natural, organic and holistic approach to healing their mind, body and spirit.

How Can Functional Medicine Help
Functional medicine uses a systematic approach to infertility. Taking into consideration, diet, nutrition and lifestyle, environmental factors (toxins and chemicals), genetics, etc for both the male and female partners. Our approach would include interventions to these factors as well as a Nutriceutical approach (as opposed to a pharmaceutical approach) for infertility.
We address prenatal and maternal health concepts, perform a comprehensive evaluation of both male and female partners. We look beyond the obvious.
